The Gansu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday that HIV/AIDS case reports in the mountainous northwestern province rose by 50 percent last year to 216. "The main reason behind the rising number of HIV/AIDS cases year-on-year lies in the fact that the government has stepped up efforts to prevent and control the spread of HIV/AIDS, and tests and monitoring were tightened accordingly," said Yu Ailing, the agency's chief. Despite the increase, she maintained that the virus is spreading slowly in Gansu compared to other regions in the Chinese mainland. Since 1993, when Gansu's first case was recorded, the province has seen 682 HIV/AIDS diagnoses. Gansu has increased its prevention funding and last year gave out more than 80,000 condoms, in addition to distributing brochures to promote AIDS awareness among men who have sex with men.
